GRAFTON, MA — A bear cub found injured on Route 2 in Erving Thursday evening has been rescued and taken to Tufts Animal Hospital in Grafton for treatment, Erving police said on Facebook Friday morning.

Officers said they found the baby bear with a significant leg and foot injury and "a protective mama bear concerned for her cub" nearby.

The cub was "in need of human intervention for a chance at recovery," so police—with the help of the Shelburne Control 911 Dispatch Center—connected with a biologist in Hubbardton, after which the cub was turned over to MASS Wildlife and taken to the hospital.
