I work for EMC in Southborough as an IT business analyst in vendor and contract management and work with my wife, Katrina at K. Genevieve Weddings & Events, a professional event planning firm based in Grafton.
I believe that my experience in the private sector, public service and volunteer positions on nonprofit boards provides a solid foundation for my service on the Planning Board, if I am honored to be elected on May 15.
Some have said the town has a reputation for being unfriendly to business. Do you think this is a valid viewpoint and, if so, what can be done to improve the situation?
I believe that in this economic climate, no town can afford having a reputation for "being unfriendly to business." Much of this is due to a labored and confusing process of doing business with town boards and departments but some of this is due to other reasons that need to be uncovered.
Grafton should be promoted as a place that is "Open for Business" by providing accurate and timely information to those interested in starting or locating a business in Grafton. Three things need to happen: Accessible information, reliable and energetic help from town employees and volunteers, improved communication through checklists, documentation and best practices. I hope to not only serve on the Planning Board but to also serve as the Planning Board representative on the Economic Development Committee.
Many people would like more businesses in town, to reduce the tax burden on homeowners. How can Grafton do this?
Identify, Market and Improve: In order to be more attractive to potential business owners, we need to identify possible locations and suitable business types that are underserved in the town. Second, we need to market those available properties and potential business types to the masses through every means available including the press, social media and a website. And finally, we need to improve the process that needs to be followed and experience business owners will have when approaching the town.
This will take a concerted effort of all boards and departments. Documenting and streamlining current processes and requirements is a must. I will do my part to assist in this effort.
What are the three most important characteristics of a successful Planning Board member?
Honesty, a good work ethic and humility.
