New Emergency Shelter at GHS?

Town Administrator says the new school has all the needed features.

The new would be a sensible location for the town's emergency shelter, officials said at last night's Board of Selectmen meeting.

The new school has showers, a kitchen and cafeteria, refrigerators and freezers, all of which can be helpful when people are housed in a shelter, Town Administrator Timothy McInerney said.

The school is scheduled to open in September 2012.

He said he would talk to Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings about the idea.

The only question concerned the capability of the emergency generator at the school.

The town currently uses the as an emergency shelter. During the freak October snowstorm, 181 residents visited from the shelter. Visitors ranged in age from two weeks to older than 90.

The shelter was also open this summer in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.
