Pigs Root Around Potter Hill Farm

The animals eat like pigs and help prepare for plowing.

Two Berkshire pigs have settled right in to their new home on the hill at Potter Hill Farm, farmer Jeffrey Backer reports in his newsletter.

They are very happy to spend their days rooting around in the dirt, looking for worms and other delicacies, he reports. He has placed them on a patch of pasture that he plans to add to the garden, and they are doing a decent pre-plow job.

The pigs are really quite handsome, and he welcomes visitors. As with the cows, visitors are asked to stay outside the electric fence.

Also, some folks have asked if it would be OK to bring them treats.  In general, the answer is no, because he wants to make sure that we know what these little piggies are eating.  If you live nearby and want to save wholesome food scraps for the pigs, please talk to Backer about it first.

In addition to the pigs, a hoophouse has been added, thanks to John Mapel. The wind on the hill has been ferocious lately, but this sturdy little hoophouse has come through just fine.

There are only onions in there now, but chard, celery, broccoli, lettuce, and more will be keeping them company soon enough, he reports.
