The transition from one middle school to two will take time and effort, and planning has already started, Grafton Middle School principal Richard Lind told the School Committee tonight.
Two middle schools, one for grades 5 and 6 and the other for grades 7 and 8, will open in the fall of 2012. Grades 5 and 6 will remain at the current middle school building, while grades 7 and 8 will move to the current high school when high school students move to the new building.
Grade 6 will remain on the first floor of their current building, Lind said. Grade five will be based on the second floor, he said.

About 450 to 480 students will be in each building, with a principal and assistant principal in each building, he said.
The goal is to make the move to the new upper middle school in the summer of 2012.
