POLL: Should Grafton Accept School Choice?

A public hearing is scheduled Monday to discuss the issue.

Should Grafton adopt school choice?

The public is encouraged to weigh in on the discussion when the Grafton School Committee holds a public hearing on the issue at 7 p.m. Monday, March 12 at .

Accepting school choice would allow students from outside school districts to attend Grafton schools. The district would receive $5,000 per student from the student’s home school district, according to current funding formulas.

Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings has encouraged the School Committee to give the issue some thought. With the addition of a new high school, a previous deterrent to school choice _ lack of ample space _ has been negated, he has said.

Committee members could choose to open school choice throughout the district, in specific grades only or not at all.

Once a child is accepted into school choice, he or she is guaranteed a space through graduation. School choice students are not accepted selectively. All candidates are placed into a poll and selected at random if there are more candidates than available slots.
