State Aid Hike Could Save School Jobs

The superintendent of schools described the proposed increase of $430,000 as "fantastic.''

The initial state aid projections for the Grafton schools could reduce the number of projected job cuts the department makes next year, Superintendent of Schools Jay Cummings said.

Initial projections call for Grafton to receive $430,000 more in state aid than in the current budget, Cummings said.

He described this increase as “fantastic,’’ particularly since many school systems were level-funded.

The School Committee unanimously supported a proposed FY 13 budget last week that cut the full-time equivalent of 12 positions. State aid numbers were not known at that time.

These cuts include: 7 instructional assistants (districtwide); 1 math teacher at ; 1 world language teacher at ; 1 math teacher at Grafton Middle School; 1 English language arts teacher at Grafton Middle School; and 1 speech and language teacher (districtwide.)
