Valley Tech’s faculty has a winning reputation to uphold after last year’s fundraiser. A full court shot was made to tie the game, bringing it into overtime. The lucky winning shot was made from behind the hoop, allowing the team of Valley Tech staff members to walk away winners.
The students are ready for the competition. Their team includes members of the boys and girls basketball teams. They have been practicing and honing their skills all season.
Students at Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School have accepted Rachel’s Challenge.
Rachel’s Challenge encourages students to make a positive change in the way they interact with others. The program is inspired by the life of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the mass shooting at Columbine High School.
Her acts of kindness and compassion coupled with the contents of her personal diaries have become the foundation for this life-changing program. Parents and community leaders that attended the community presentation were encouraged to positively influence the decisions made by the youth in their lives.
A program, led by a friend of Rachel, was presented Feb. 9 to students and the community.
The program make an impact on students, including Emily Dufault of Grafton, a sophomore in the dental assisting program.
“Rachel’s Challenge really had an impact on me. We were asked to close our eyes and imagine five to seven people we are close to, and to then talk to them within three days about why they are so important to us. I plan to pass along the meaningful message of Rachel’s Challenge by doing that.''
“Rachel’s Challenge turns a negative into a positive, and we are going to ensure that the changes occurring here at Blackstone Valley Tech as a result of this program continue,” said Mollie Letendre, Valley Tech junior and member of the school’s Skills USA Community Service Team.
“It was an amazing and inspiring presentation,” said Valley Tech junior Beth Belanger, who is also a member of the Community Service Team.
Throughout the school year the Friends of Rachel Club and the Skills USA Community Service Team, with approximately 100 members combined, will meet to continue to produce chain reactions of kindness and compassion and help solve problems that arise in the student body through problem-solving and positive mediation.
