Board of Health issues precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

The is alerting residents that it is time to once again protect themselves against West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
The department has just learned that a pool of mosquitoes in Worcester has been identified as carrying the West Nile Virus.
Both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis are mosquito-borne viruses, and simple preventative steps can be taken by all to minimize the risk of acquiring these illnesses.Â

Apply repellents that contain DEET on those for whom it is safe. Read product labels carefully for restrictions
Whenever possible, avoid outdoor activities at dawn and dusk

Rid your surroundings of any standing water
Use mosquito nets on baby carriages
Make sure that all your screens are in good repair and that all openings to the outside are equipped with screens or kept closed
Wear long sleeves and pants
Please notify the Grafton Health Department of any abandoned swimming pools; a swimming pool not being used that has not been drained and treated properly is an inviting environment for mosquito growth.Â
This would include even small toddler-sized pools and any containers that might contain standing (uncirculated) water.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will continue to carry out a mosquito surveillance program that provides early warning to the presence of West Nile Virus or Eastern Equine Encephalitis in local communities.Â
