Watch Out for Fake Hingham D.A.R.E. Solicitation

The following information was provided by the Hingham Police Department. Where arrests are mentions, it does not indicate a conviction.

Hingham police are warning residents to be aware of a phone scam in which the caller pretends to be from the Hingham D.A.R.E. Program and asks for a donation.

"Last week (and again this morning) we received several calls from Hingham residents who received phone calls from someone soliciting donations for the 'Hingham D.A.R.E. Program,'" the HPD said in an email Monday afternoon. 

"The caller asked them to leave a check to be picked up in their mailbox.

"The Hingham D.A.R.E. program does not solicit donations by phone. Although our D.A.R.E. Officer does hold fundraising events throughout year they do not include calling any resident.

"If you get a call about a group seeking donation for "Hingham D.A.R.E"  we suggest you clarify who is collecting your money and not give them any of your personal information.

"This organization does not represent the Hingham Police or the Hingham D.A.R.E. program. If anyone chooses to make a donation to the Hingham Police program, checks made out to the Hingham Police Department Drug Education Fund can be mailed c/o Officer Robert Ramsey, Hingham Police Dept., 212 Central St., Hingham, MA 02043."
