World Oceans Day is Today, June 8
In celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8, Woods Hole Group offers simple tips for preserving our beaches.

The following is from a press release:
Communities around the globe will celebrate World Oceans Day today as an opportunity to learn more about our ocean and take action to help conserve it.
In celebration of the day, Massachusetts-based Woods Hole Group, a coastal engineering company, offers the following tips for preserving our fragile oceanic systems.
·Take a walk along your local beach with a small trash bag and pick up the debris you encounter.
·Avoid anchoring, dragging, and propeller wash when operating a boat near eel grass and other submerged aquatic vegetation.
·Use single barbless hooks (or pinch the barb with pliers) for sport fishing when practicing catch and release.
·Stay out of the dune and salt marsh grasses while visiting the beach.
·Walk on the beach reading conservationist Rachel Carson’s award-winning book, "The Edge of the Sea."
“Particularly here on Cape Cod, our beaches are fragile environments and need nourishing and TLC if we’re to enjoy them for generations to come. Fortunately, there are many simple steps that we can all take to help preserve this special coastline,” said Dennis Aubrey, president of Woods Hole Group.
World Oceans Day, spearheaded by The Ocean Project, includes hundreds of events taking place around the world, which can be seen at www.worldoceansday.org.
