Anti-Casino Statewide Ballot Initiative, Girl Scouts Need Volunteers

Here are five things to help inform your day.

1. A coalition of public health, municipal, family and religious leaders, and state citizens on Wednesday submitted an Initiative Petition to repeal the law allowing casino gambling in Massachusetts. The "Repeal the Casino Deal" group filed the paperwork with the office of the state Attorney General, and is hoping to get her approval for a ballot question on the Nov. 2014 ballot.

2. The Girl Scouts of Southeastern Massachusetts need a few good volunteers. Help girls in the area achieve their potential by sharing your time with this organization.

3. A mosquito with the West Nile virus was trapped in Holliston in samplings taken on Aug. 1.

4. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission will hold an open meeting Friday at 9:30 a.m. The meeting will be live-streamed from the commission's offices in Boston, at www.massgaming.com.

5. Don't forget: this weekend is the tax-free weekend!
