Jim McGovern On His Time Behind Bars With George Clooney

Jim McGovern spent time in jail with George Clooney while protesting genocide in Sudan.

Jim McGovern, Holliston's Congressman, knew he would be arrested while demonstrating outside the Sudanese embassy Friday, he told golocalworcester.com.

He hoped his actions would bring attention to the genocide that is taking place in Sudan.

“We held a rally outside the embassy, technically on Sudanese property. We were told by police that we crossed the police line and after we finished our speeches we were given a warning and told to disperse and we didn’t disperse, so we were arrested,” he told golocalworcester.com.

McGovern was arrested with fellow protestor, George Clooney, who chatted with the Congressman about future steps to stop the killings in Sudan while the duo was behind bars.

After spending 4 hours in lockup, and incurring $100 fines, Clooney and McGovern were released.

"I protested a lot of things in college. Protest is a very American thing. In some ways it is uniquely American. That is what our country is about, to say what you believe in. Sometimes it is popular and sometimes it is not," McGovern said.
