Police Chief Proposes Fine for Marijuana Users

Those found using marijuana could face a $300 fine.

Those found smoking marijuana could face a $300 fine if a measure proposed by  Chief, John Moore, passes into law during town meeting in May.

Massachusetts decriminalized marijuana in 2009, making possession of under an ounce of pot punishable by a $100 fine. The law allowed cities and towns to pass ordinances regulating public consumption.

"We hope, based on a high civil fine, people will think twice about smoking in a public place," Moore said.

Surrounding towns including Bellingham, Ashland and Marlborough enforce similar fines, according to Moore.

Since the drug's decriminalization, Moore said cases of marijuana possession have not risen, and a small percentage of those in possession are found smoking in public.
