POLL: Should Women Serve in Combat Roles?

Scott Brown recently praised U.S. Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta for allowing women to serve closer to the front lines.

Sen. Scott Brown is asking top U.S. defense officials for an expanded role for women in the military, arguing they should be allowed to serve in infantry, armor, and special operations units, the Boston Globe reports.

"We have an obligation to expand the professional opportunities available to women, especially considering their sacrifices," Brown wrote in a letter to U.S. Defense Secretary, Leon Panetta. "Doing so in my view would improve military effectiveness, not detract from it."

Earlier in February, the Pentagon opened positions for women closer to the front lines than ever before. But Brown says the cuts in barring women from combat roles don't go far enough.

"I believe women should be able to serve in front line positions if they desire," he wrote. "We should not waste time endlessly studying this issue and getting bogged down in bureaucratic red tape."
