Jamaica Plain-based Bikes Not Bombs is looking for volunteers to help with an effort this October to load bikes into containers that will be shipped off to Ghana.

The effort entails packing bikes into a huge sea freight container that will subsequently be shipped to Koforidua, Ghana as part of BNB’s “Ability Bikes Cooperative,” a micro-enterprise bike shop that imports bicycles and refurbishes them, later selling them to people in need at affordable prices.

“With careful packing we’re able to fit up to 500 bikes (plus parts) in one container, but this is no easy feat,” reads the BNB website.

The loading is set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the BNB warehouse, 10 Harvard St. in Dorchester.

Those interested in participating can volunteer for an hour or the entire day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to those who volunteer. Those who do volunteer should wear weather-appropriate clothing and bring a pair of work gloves or something similar with which to carry loads of old dusty bikes.
