Democrat Edward Markey was elected into the U.S. Senate in Tuesday's special state election. <a href="https://jamaicaplain.patch.com/articles/markey-wins-senate-special-election" rel="nofollow">He took 55 percent of the vote in Massachusetts</a>, and nearly all of the vote in Jamaica Plain. According to city voter figures, Markey received just under 90 percent of the total combined vote in Ward 19 (JP) and Ward 11, which includes a portion of both Roxbury and Jamaica Plain. In the historically low-turnout election, Markey received 8,907 votes in total for both wards, while Gomez got 1,012, despite making <a href="https://jamaicaplain.patch.com/articles/gomez-visits-longtime-jp-candy-wholesaler" rel="nofollow">a quick campaign stop</a> in the neighborhood in May. Markey took <a href="https://jamaicaplain.patch.com/articles/jp-majority-voted-for-markey" rel="nofollow">most of the JP vote</a> in the May primary.
