Take a Tour of JP’s Most Sustainable Building

Developers in partnership with the city of Boston will lead a walking tour of a Jamaica Plain model home of a nearly zero-energy output building.

There has been a push to make buildings more energy efficient over the course of the past decade, and developers are mostly constructing with LEED certifications in mind. But in Jamaica Plain there sits a building that could already be stumbling upon the future of green building.

GFS Development, Utile Inc., in partnership with Sunlight Solar Energy and city officials will lead a walking tour of a 64 Catherine St., JP, June 29 at 10 a.m. This building is part of Mayor Thomas Menino’s E+ (E Positive) Green Building Program, which “will demonstrate the feasibility of regenerative multi-unit residential buildings and bring energy and environmentally positive homes to Boston’s neighborhoods. These proposal submissions show us that regenerative buildings are achievable and not beholden to a particular esthetic,” according to information on the initiative from the E+ website.

The idea is to bring buildings to “net zero,” which is no net energy consumption or carbon emissions output, by implementing a variety of sustainable energy practices.
