After 141 Year Hiatus, Literary Society Will Meet Next Monday

Lynnfield resident Stephen Smith reported in an email to this website recently that plans are in motion to revive the Young Men’s Literary Society of Lynnfield Center with a meeting on Monday, October 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. This would mark the 141st anniversary of the day the club was last supposed to meet - but apparently didn't. 

“We are going to revive a very old Lynnfield club that had a short life a long time ago,” said Smith, adding that the literary society’s last scheduled meeting – on October 14, 1872 - was cancelled. Smith is the CEO and co-founder of the educational game company JogNog. 

New members are welcome to attend and can email Smith at sss555@verizon.net for information. Members are expected to vote on revised by-laws at this meeting.

For the record – Ulysses S. Grant was president in 1872, Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting that year, and Yellowstone became America’s first national park. One somewhat still known book published in 1872 was “In a Glass Darkly” by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu, sort of a Victorian Era grandfather of the modern ghost tale.
