MANSFIELD, MA — Michelle Banchi says she's never been much of a runner, but after losing her brother Jason to a battle with substance abuse in 2017, she said she was willing to do anything to get the word out and help other people who are dealing with similar situations.

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Michelle decided to try running as a way to clear her head, she had no idea it would quickly turn into her way to grieve, finding a way to be at peace with everything.

"He'd be laughing if he knew I was doing this for him," Michelle said, adding that she knows he'd be proud of her regardless. "I'm running for the Herren Project, a non-profit that really helped me when I needed it. They offer support for families who are really going through it and families who are grieving."

"I will be running in honor of my brother, Jason Banchi who lost his battle with substance abuse in May 2017, but I also will be running for those who battle substance abuse, the family and friends who support their loved ones battling, those who are grieving, and most importantly, for my brother Jason, who I miss more and more each day," Michelle said.

Though she's been a spectator a few times, this will be the first Boston Marathon Banchi has ever run herself, adding that she's excited to be on the other side. "Substance Use Disorder just needs to be talked about more," she said. "It takes a toll on the user, but also the family who just want their loved one to get better."

Michelle says she has been following a rigorous training schedule, running in every type of weather with friends who are also running for the Herren Project.

"I'd like to thank my parents for their support on this journey to honor Jason, and Team Herren Project. I'd also like to recognize those who have supported me, whether it's been through our friendships, donations, or a kind word."

"Here's to you, Jas."
