Town Meeting Drops Town Manager Residency Requirement

Prior to the vote, the town manager was required to move to town within a year of starting the job.

MANSFIELD, MA — Town Manager Kevin Dumas won't have to look for a new place to live in Mansfield, nor will any other future town managers.

Town Meeting voted to drop the residency requirement Tuesday night, according to the Mansfield News. Prior to the vote, the town manager was required to move to town within a year of starting the job.

During a selectmen meeting earlier this year, Selectman Jess Aptowitz said that the requirement limited the pool of candidates for the town manager search.

Selectman Frank DelVecchio noted during the same meeting that the original candidate of choice from the last town manager search did not meet the residency requirement and turned down the job when he decided that he didn't want to move to Mansfield.

The charter change is considered minor and does not require a ballot question.
