Freight Train Fire Ignites Near Foxborough-Mansfield Line

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

MANSFIELD, MA — A fire on a freight train shut down streets near the Mansfield-Foxborough town line Wednesday afternoon.

Mansfield Fire Chief Neal Boldrighini told the Sun Chronicle that an overhead electrical wire on a train track catenary system may have caused the fired in the train full of discarded construction items.

County Street from Spring Street in Foxborough to North Main Street on the Mansfield end was closed has firefighters worked, police said. Only emergency vehicles were allowed down the road.

The train requred an extra hose down period to ensure that the fire was extinguished, Boldrighini said. The train was moved into the freight yard and tanker cars were separated.

The cause remains under investigation.

Foxborough and Norton assisted at the scene. North Attleboro covered the stations and MBTA Transit Police also responded.
