Join us for a one-hour lecture and Q&amp;A to learn about the holiday traditions of New Mexico. 

For more than 400 years, New Mexico has celebrated the holiday season with traditions that reflect its deep Spanish and Mexican roots. Communities come alive with farolitos and luminarias lighting the streets, and with processions of Las Posadas reenacting Mary and Joseph’s search for shelter. Join artist and writer Christopher Gibson to explore festive customs like Pastorelas plays, piñatas and family gatherings with tamales and bizcochitos, the state’s beloved cookie. This lecture will highlight how towns from Taos to Las Cruces keep these enduring traditions vibrant today. 

A viewing of the online lecture will be held in the Event Center at Abbot Public Library, followed by a discussion session.

Christopher Gibson is an award-winning artist, writer and arts educator who makes his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His work includes the Cuentos del Camino series on lower Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe and mixed-media installations at numerous museums in New Mexico and California. Over the years he has written several articles on Hispanic Arts and Culture for the magazines Tradición Revista and Imagen.

New Mexico's Holiday Traditions — Lights, Carols & Tamales

Students in grades 2-5 are welcome to come to this informal chess club to practice by playing with others also interested in developing their skills and sharing an interest in chess. The class will be held on Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with facilitator Ben Konoff and his daughter, Abigail, helping kids with some of the basics of chess and getting live playing practice on a weekly basis.
Class is limited to 10 children in grades 2-5. Online registration is required - please register at<a href="https://abbotlibrary.org/events" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">abbotlibrary.org/events</a>.

Children of any age and their caregivers can visit the Killam Children’s Room between 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. to make a seasonal craft to take home. Working freely with seasonal themed crafts enhances pre-literacy in children with practice in sequencing steps, hand-eye coordination, etc. No registration is required.

For 30 years, Dara VanRemoortel has been providing joyful and educational music programs at libraries, preschools, birthday parties and more. Her interactive programs include favorite classic songs and easy-to-learn new songs, finger puppets, finger plays, engaging props, rhythmic activities, instrument playing and creative movement, while introducing some simple elements of music (pitch, rhythm, beat, tempo and dynamics).
Lots of clapping, marching, singing, creative expression and FUN! This program is designed for the 2–5-year-old child, although older and younger children will enjoy it, too. No registration is required.

Founded in 2013, The BrassFed Nation is dedicated to the advancement of horn-driven music through exposure and outreach in both education and local musical culture! The collective features 3 unique ensembles; Cape Ann Big Band, The Jambalaya Horns, and The 13-Piece DubTone Orchestra - all striving to inspire and connect musicians of all ages through performances, private studio lessons, workshops, and interactive clinics. ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE: Paying homage to the infectious beats and sounds of New Orleans, the BrassFed Orchestra will cue the “Big Four'' and transport audience members to the streets of the Crescent City for a Holiday Celebration that is full of surprises! This year’s program will showcase members of The Jambalaya Horns and feature a number of guest instrumentalists from the New England music scene!
