From the icy waters of the Arctic to the vast seas surrounding Antarctica, some of the world’s most majestic whales make their home in Earth’s coldest environments. Join Amanda Hunter, marine biologist and polar expedition guide, to explore how these extraordinary creatures have adapted to life in such extreme conditions and why they migrate to the planet’s polar regions. Discover how whales play a vital role in maintaining ocean health and combating climate change.
A viewing of the online lecture will be held in the Event Center at Abbot Public Library, followed by a discussion session. Registration is required and limited to 35. Amanda Hunter’s passion for the ocean, wildlife, conservation, and her international experience led her to become a marine biologist and polar expedition guide. She is one of the proud founders of Ocean Youth Academy, a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting youth to our planet’s oceans. Hunter is excited to share with others the magic of our natural world and to guide people through "once in a lifetime" experiences.

Lectures with Road Scholar: Whales of the Polar Region

This cumulative six-week workshop led by artist Steve McClure explores the concepts and magic of stop-motion animation. Participants will collaborate to make a different stop-action movie each week. We’ll start by performing magic tricks with the kids as the actors. From there we’ll make two dimensional and then Claymation movies, developing characters and stories along the way. Participants will make paper back drops, cut-out paper characters, title cards, and mold clay characters with the goal of making a short feature film to be screened at the library in March!&nbsp;

The workshop series is limited to 10 children ages 8-11, and online registration is required - please register for the first session at <a href="https://tinyurl.com/2026-Stop-Motion" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">tinyurl.com/2026-Stop-Motion</a>. By registering for the first session, you will register for all the subsequent sessions. Materials and tablets will be provided, but wearing clothing for possible art mess is recommended.&nbsp;

Moore about her recent release, "Julia," the untold story of Julia Child before she became a worldwide cooking sensation! Ashland Public Library will chat with Moore about the book, her writing and research process, and if she found any surprises when looking into the iconic Julia Child! We hope you can join us for this fun conversation.&nbsp;
