Legion Baseball Season Connects Marblehead and Swampscott

The newly merged Swampscott and Marblehead American Legion team finished 7-8 this summer, as players competed and forged friendships.

The  baseball team's first season together ended on Thursday night with a great game vs. playoff bound Gloucester at the Swampscott High School field.

Although the Sr. team lost 8-6, it was a very exciting game.

Nick Meninno pitched five strong innings against a very tough Gloucester team. Ross Gienieczko pitched the final frame in fine form as he did all summer for the Swampscott/Marblehead team.

The team was anchored by one of the top catchers in New England, Marblehead’s Colton Dana.

The team finished the season going seven and eight with one forfeit, but the record doesn’t show the team lost to the top three teams Gloucester, Newburyport (twice) and Lawrence by a total of five runs.

As coaches, all we can ask for is that these guys go out and compete, and that’s what they did all summer.

Although the league asked us to merge to make for a stronger team, for my assistant coach Jim Toomey (Lynn probation) and I, it was more about getting the Swampscott and Marblehead kids together as teammates and friends.

We really didn’t care much about our overall record. We cared that these kids competed and became friends.

Honestly, it was great to see good kids meeting one another. The team should be very strong next season with retuning players Ross Gienieczko, Dan Colbert, Evan Heferman, Nick Meninno, Gino Cresta Jr, Trevor Massey, Cory Carmody, Jake Cassidy, Max Hall and Colton Dana.

Next season, we will be looking to replace some big holes as Ryan Stanojev, Penn State, Dan Bonito, Western New England, Tim Cassidy Jr., Umass Amherst, Casey Collins, Hamilton College, and Justyn Fischer- Block, Sacred Heart, and Chris Neumann have finished their Legion baseball Career.

Tryouts will be next spring. The Swampscott Marblehead Jr. Legion team finishes up their season this coming week.

Legion Baseball is for players 14-19 years old, and the Swampscott/Marblehead teams play teams from some of the top Legion programs in New England.
