Shalane Flanagan Returns to Marblehead for 5k Fundraiser

Less than a month after winning the New York City Marathon, Marblehead native Shalane Flanagan returned to her hometown for another race.

MARBLEHEAD, MA - Less than a month after winning the New York City Marathon, Marblehead native Shalane Flanagan returned to her hometown by running a 5K race that is near and dear to her, according to Fox 25.

Flanagan won the Women's New York City Marathon with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, 53 seconds. With 3 miles to go, she pulled ahead of 3-time defending champion Mary Keitany of Kenya.

As part of the 2017 Marblehead Race Series, a variety of races that take place around town between May and November, Back the Track will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27.

The proceeds from Saturday's race goes towards rebuilding a track in the town.

"I feel so much love. These are the people I dig deep in training for and my races and they're constantly supporting my dreams and make it worthwhile when I do well because I get to celebrate with people who really care," Flanagan said. "The future is quite unknown at this point, I'm just absorbing, soaking in winning the NYC marathon."
