Veterans Day 2014: What's Open and Closed in Marblehead

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. The day honors military veterans with parades and speeches across the nation.

Here’s a look at some of what is open and what is closed on Tuesday. As always, it is best to call ahead.

Marblehead Town Hall (Abbot Hall) and town offices (Mary Alley Municipal Building): Closed

Abbot Public Library: Closed

U.S. Post Offices and mail delivery: The post office on Smith Street in Marblehead is closed. There is no mail delivery.

Trash pickup: No trash pickup, pickup is delayed by one day all week.

Banks: Most banks are closed - including Bank of America and Salem Five.

MBTA: Commuter rail and buses will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Schools: All schools closed.

Supermarkets, convenience store, pharmacies, restaurants and other retail businesses: Many local businesses are open regular hours, but it is always good to call ahead.

Liquor Stores: Allowed to be open, by law. Call ahead.
