5 Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 10
Have some artistic talent you want to share with the world? The Coffee Loft is offering cash for the best submissions in an upcoming show.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.
1. The Coffee Loft has two upcoming art shows and are looking for submissions from the Marlborough community. Art as Protest and Love is in the Air are the themes for the shows and all submissions of art are due by Feb. 3. There is a $15 entrance fee, and the winner of each show will go home with $100. 2. There will be a Kitchenware Drive Collection for sponsored by the Marlborough Girl Scouts Monday, Jan. 16. Kitchen supplies can be dropped off at Furnishing Options 66 Mechanic Street address from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3. It's time again to celebrate the annual Girl Scout cookie sale. Girl Scouts will be out and about in uniform in the coming weeks selling everyone's favorite cookies. Choose from eight tasty varieties that include: Thin Mints and Caramel DeLites to Peanut Butter Patties and Thanks-A-Lots. The annual sale kicked off Monday, Dec. 9 and will culminate on March 9. 4. The American Red Cross will host two blood drives in Marlborough this month. On Jan. 11 and 25 head down to the Masonic Hall on the corner of Main and Newton streets, from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., and for your much-needed donation of life you will receive a coupon for a free pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee. Call 1-800-REDCROSS or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome and donors should all bring positive identification.

5. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and a great opportunity to educate women and raise awareness about the importance of regular preventive checkups, including cervical cancer screenings. Every year, approximately 13,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with cervical cancer, and about 4,000 American women die of the disease—but luckily, it’s one of the most preventable cancers out there.
