5 Things You Need to Know Today: Nov. 21
Marlborough's postmaster will be at a press conference this morning with Mayor Nancy Stevens to talk about the city's upcoming holiday season plans.

Our weekday morning column, 5 Things You Need to Know, provides you with information that can help you plan your day and give you some fodder for water cooler conversations.
1. , in partnership with the Marlborough Human Services Department, will be holding a voluntary “Heat and Eat” toll road collection in support of the Mayor’s Charity Relief Fund this morning between the hours of 7 and 9 a.m. at the intersections of Route 20/Granger Boulevard and Route 85/Main Street. The event is a way to help raise fuel assistance funds for Marlborough residents experiencing financial hardships.
2. Marlborough's overnight parking ban goes into effect on Dec. 1, 2011 and will continue through March 15, 2012. During that period, on-street parking is prohibited from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night. Vehicles violating the ban are subject to a $10 penalty. Additionally, vehicles that interfere with snow or ice removal operations are subject to towing and storage at the owner's expense.

3. Fifty-nine Marlborough High School seniors have been named recipients of the state’s John and Abigail Adams scholarships. The merit-based scholarship rewards hard work and achievement by Massachusetts students and encourages high-achieving students to attend Massachusetts’ public colleges and universities. The scholarships entitle recipients up to four years’ tuition waiver at any UMass campus or any state or community college. 4. The adult Practical Nursing Program located at is holding their annual Open House on Thursday, Dec. 15. Learn how it is possible to become a practical nurse through the 10 month program offered. See lab demonstrations and attend an informational presentation. Registration and check-in is from 8:45 to 9 a.m.; the info session with demonstration is from 9 to 10:30 a.m., with a question and answer session following. RSVP online to by Friday, Dec. 9. 5. A press conference is scheduled for at 11 a.m. in front of the to kickoff the city’s Home for the Holidays events. Postmaster Nicholas Tselikis will be in attendance to announce the new holiday stamps for the holiday season as well as where the Santa mailboxes will be placed. Mayor Nancy Stevens will also be in attendance to discuss the upcoming Home for the Holidays event and tree lighting on Union Common, scheduled for the evening of Friday, Dec. 2.
