Fun Fact: Silly String is Illegal in Marlborough
Silly String was banned within the city limits in the 1980s after kids used it to terrorize the Labor Day parade.

MARLBOROUGH, MA - Did you know that Silly String is illegal in the city of Marlborough?
The ”silly” rule was passed back in 1988 after some heinous behavior from young people at that year’s Labor Day parade, the Associated Press reported at the time of the incident.
Local vendors sold it to the kids and the situation got out of hand, according to the AP. The hooligans reportedly sprayed people trying to enjoy the parade as well as passing cars and firetrucks.

‘’Every kid had a can of the stuff,’’ Police Chief Joseph Barry told the AP in 1988. “’The Department of Public Works had a horrendous time cleaning it up.”
Still to this day Silly String users can get slapped with a fine for selling or possessing ”any instrument or product designed to project a string or streamer of plastic material,” according to the city of Marlborough.
