MARLBOROUGH, MA — The deadline to pull papers to run in Marlborough's 2023 election passed on Friday, and five local residents got in just under the wire to potentially run for various seats up for election.

Following the Friday deadline to pull papers, all candidates are facing a deadline on Tuesday to return the signatures of voters (certified by the city clerk) required to actually make it onto the ballot.

  • Kevin Duffy, At-Large City Council
  • Maureen Brennan, Ward 6 City Council
  • Jovani Lawrence Jaundoo Cloutier, Ward 4 City Council
  • Thomas Edward Dalton, Ward 4 City Council
  • Paul Ferro, Mayor (Ferro also previously pulled papers to run for an At-Large council seat)

Thirty-two candidates have pulled papers to run in Marlborough's 2023 election, and 24 have been certified by the city clerk to appear on the ballot.

The two potential Ward 4 challengers mean first-term Ward 4 Councilor Teona Brown will likely face a challenge this year. One person pulled papers in early June to run in the Ward 4 race, but they had not returned them as of Friday.

This year's election is shaping up to be one of the largest in recent history with Mayor Arthur Vigeant not running for reelection. His decision has resulted in a reordering among city councilors, with At-Large Councilor Samantha Perlman and Ward 3 Councilor Christian Dumais launching bids for mayor. With their two seats now open, Ward 6 Councilor Sean Navin is making a run for an At-Large seat. Ward 1 Councilor Laura Wagner's seat will also be open this year because she is moving out of Marlborough.
