MARLBOROUGH, MA — December has been extremely snow-free so far. But that could change this weekend.

There's a low-pressure storm system brewing in the Ohio River Valley that will move into New England on Saturday. The system could either bring rain or snow, depending on how far north the system travels.

As of Wednesday, it was "too soon to say anything for sure" about what the storm will bring, National Weather Service meteorologist Bryce Williams said. It all depends on where the northern edge of the system will fall. If it rises through the region at a longitude in line with Nantucket, that will mean a higher chance of snow — especially in the hilly areas around Worcester and farther west.

The first measurable snow of winter fell in southern New England on Dec. 8, but it didn't last long. A major warm-up, high winds and rain on Friday and Saturday obliterated the snow.

Speaking of a warm-up: the weather service is predicting temperatures at or near 60 degrees on Thursday. Boston, Worcester, Hartford and Providence may all break records if the forecast holds.
