Pot Shops Possibly Restricted To Section Of Route 20, Marlborough

If city council approves a zoning ordinance, pot shops will be restricted to one section of Route 20.

MARLBOROUGH, MA—If passed, zoning amendments for recreational and medical marijuana shops would restrict those facilities and stores in Marlborough to a specific section of Route 20 in the city.

Councilor Joseph Delano presented the ordinance at the City Council meeting on Monday.

The proposed ordinance, which can be found here, says that medical marijuana treatment centers would be restricted to Route 20 from the Northborough town line to I-495 to the Sudbury town line at Phelps Street. The ordinance proposal for recreational pot shops is geographically identical. Cultivation, manufacturing and testing facilities would also be allowed west of I-495, according to the proposed ordinance.

The proposal also says that these shops can't be within 500 feet of day care centers or schools.

The proposal was referred by councilors at their Monday meeting to the Urban Affairs Committee and Planning Board, reports MetroWest Daily News, with a public hearing scheduled for Feb. 26. Marlborough approved the ballot question to legalize recreational marijuana 9,418 to 8,546. A measure to approve a temporary moratorium did not materialize because the Legal Affairs Committee was waiting for additional regulations and information from the state.
