Sligo Hill Water Tower Undergoing Restoration

The City of Marlborough is in the process of rehabbing the old water tower that has been a city landmark for years.

Whether traveling up 495 or simply traversing the side streets of Marlborough, most are familiar with the sight of the Sligo Hill Water Tower looming over the city skyline.

Originally constructed in 1895, the water tower not been used to distribute water for nearly 50 years, instead serving as a city landmark, said Marlborough's public facilities director John Ghiloni.

"This is just a renovation," said Ghiloni. "It started a couple of months ago because the water tower was just too run-down and needed some restoration."

Area residents may have noticed the top of the tower missing in recent weeks, and just recently a shroud placed around the legs to contain the renovation.

"It will be getting a new top and they are power washing and painting the steel," continued Ghiloni.

The shroud is also a means of heating the project and containing any lead paint debris that may come loose in the cleaning process.

The tower serves a purpose other than its historical importance, as it is home to several cell phone antennas that provide the with income.

The wires that have until now run up the legs of the tower will be placed inside a monopole running up the center, a design that will be more in line with the tower's original design, said Ghiloni.

The city opened the bidding process for the project nearly a year ago and was won by Amstar out of western New York state. The project should wrap up in several weeks, said Ghiloni, and after the cell companies restore their service to the location, a final coat of paint will finish the project come springtime.

Ghiloni said that those concerned that the tower will have a new look, however, need not worry.

"It is simply being refreshed and will look exactly the same other than that it's been painted and will look good."
