
A motor vehicle crash that has caused serious injuries to three people and minor injuries to two others is being investigated by the Massachusetts State Police and Edgartown Police. The crash occurred at 2:20 p.m. on Barnes Road Extension, near the airport Mobil station, and involved two vehicles.Three people have been life-flighted by helicopter to Boston hospitals, according to a statement from the Massachusetts State Police.
"Preliminary information by troopers from the Oak Bluffs Barracks indicates that a Jeep with four occupants from New Hampshire was traveling northbound on the Barnes Road Extension when it apparently pulled to its right, to the side of the road. At that time, a Volkswagen Taureg operated by a Cambridge man was travelling behind the Jeep in the same direction, and came up on the left side of the Jeep. As the Taureg neared the Jeep, the Jeep turned to its left into a U-turn. As it did so, the front end of the Taureg broadsided the Jeep, causing a 21-year-old Berlin, N.H., woman to be ejected from the Jeep's back seat and causing injuries to the four other people involved," stated the Mass. State Police press release.
"The Berlin, N.H., woman was transported to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston by medical helicopter with life-threatening injuries. Her fellow back seat Jeep passenger, a Dummer, N.H., man in his early 20s, also suffered potential life-threatening injuries and has also been transported by medical helicopter, he to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.
"A third victim, a 52-year-old Dummer, N.H., woman, who was a front seat passenger in Jeep, also suffered serious injuries and is being taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital.
"The Jeep's driver, a 52-year-old Dummer, N.H., man, and the Taureg's driver, a 19-year-old Cambridge man, were transported by ambulance to Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
"Investigators are examing all available evidence, as well as interviewing witnesses, to determine the exact sequence of events and potential causation factors. Troopers are investigating whether the the speed of the Taureg was among the contributing factors.
"The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section has responded to the island, transported there by the State Police Air Wing. Troopers from the State Police Crime Scene Services and Cape and Islands Detective Unit are also assisting troopers from the Oak Bluffs State Police Barracks and Edgartown Police with the investigation.
"No further information, including the names of the victims, is being released at this time. Please note that State Police do not comment on specific familial relationships," stated the press release.
