Medfield Fire Department Open House and Chicken BBQ...
On Saturday, Oct 4th, the MFD held an OPEN HOUSE from 10am - 4pm for all to attend.
The event was a full day of activities and fire safety education for kids, adults and everyone in the family.
As visitors walked into the fire truck bay of the Public Safety Building, an incredible 1874 Medffeld antique handtub fire truck was on display! The MFD had taped a $ collection boot to it, with hopes of eventually restoring this gem.

The MFD Open House was combined, this year, with the annual Chicken BBQ, so it was a busy place. A big shout out to Pollards Texas BBQ for donating their time to cooking the chicken to perfection.
At 11am, the MFD demonstrated the "Jaws of Life" for visitors to see. A big thank you to Assured Collision for donating the automobile used for this demonstration.

Throughout the day, youngsters were able to sit on the equipment that was provided, such as the (water, snow, rescue, etc) vehicles, as well as dress in full MFD garb (which proved to be very heavy for most kids) and see what it is like to put on all the gear. They were also offered some freebies, i.e., fireman's hats, stickers, coloring books, Halloween treat bags and much more!
In addition to the MFD tables, Jack Gargano, MHS Sophomore and Troop 89 Boy Scout had a table set up showing his Eagle Project, "Stop the Bleed ". He is raising awareness and raising funds to get "Stop the Bleed" kits available at Medfield sporting fields and ice arenas in the area, and he was quick to explain the importance of the timing of how these kits can help when there is a medical crisis.
At 2pm, there was a demonstration of the importance of fire sprinklers in homes! A mobile demo truck displayed two living rooms (side by side), one equipped with fire sprinklers and one without. The MFD lit the the trash can in the "Sprinkler room" first and showed how quickly the sprinkler extinguished the fire - this only took 13 seconds to activate and control the fire!!!
The second room had no sprinklers, and as it began to burn (and a display of time was shown to all), Chief DeKing narrated how long it would take (on average) for the MFD to get to your home (at least 4 minutes)....and how quickly this room burned until it became entirely engulfed in flame and flash over, in only 5min 10 seconds. This demonstration was impactful.
The Medfield Fire Department is amazing.....during this very full day of demonstrations and families visiting, the department responded to 8 separate fire and medical calls. Thank you, Chief DeKing and the entire Medfield Fire Department for your commitment to the community of Medfield.
