Medfield Historical Society Presents "John Quincy Adams, Reluctant Abolitionist"

On Wednesday, October 15 at 7:00 PM, the Medfield Historical Society will present "John Quincy Adams, Reluctant Abolitionist" with Jeffrey Denman at the First Parish Church, 26 North Street in Medfield.

Denman, a former Brookline High School History teacher, writes frequently about topics related to the American Revolution and Civil War. For this presentation, he will consider Adams' fresh and nuanced views about slavery which are described in his vast diary, and how the issue led to
the American Civil War.

Prickly and curmudgeonly, Adams associated with abolitionists but never became one himself. However, he did harbor intense hatred for the arguments of Southern slaveholders and eventually found himself in the center of America's greatest struggle. Denman will draw from his recently
published book about John Quincy Adams for this talk.
