Back-To-School In Medford: 5 Things To Know

The pandemic has forced a radically different start to the school year. Here are five things to expect.

MEDFORD, MA — After months of debate and a last-minute switcharoo, the Medford Public Schools is set to start remotely this week. Here are five things to keep in mind as students return to classes:

1. When is the first day of school? School will start Wednesday, Sept. 16. The district has scheduled "Meet and Greets" for students and families Monday and Tuesday.

2. When will students return to in-person instruction? High-needs students have been prioritized in the phased return plan and will start in-person learning Sept. 28. The School Committee will re-evaluate the back-to-school plan for all other students no later than Oct. 16.

3. What will be expected of students during remote learning? Students are expected to treat online classes as if they are in a classroom. They will complete the assigned course work, and parents can check the SchoolBrains portal/Google Classroom for updates on progress. Students will only complete their own work.

Students are expected to log in to class on time. Parents must communicate with the teacher through email or a phone call to the school if their child is sick.

4. What will be expected of teachers during remote learning? Teachers will post weekly objectives and learning expectations and will be responsible for providing synchronous (live) and asynchronous (independent) lessons during their assigned class times. They will take attendance and refer any concerns to the building administration.

Grading: SchoolBrains will be used at the secondary level. At the elementary level, teachers will record grades using the established systems. Teachers are responsible for providing students with feedback on their work and recording students' grades in a common location (SchoolBrains, Google Classroom, etc.). The grading system will be communicated with families.
