Hopedale Boy, 8, Dies In Maine Collision: Police

The crash happened Saturday between a family from Hopedale and another driver along Route 2 in Rumford.

HOPEDALE, MA — An 8-year-old boy died in a collision over the weekend along Route 2 in west-central Maine, according to police.

The boy was riding with his father and 5-year-old brother in Rumford around 3 p.m. Saturday when they collided head-on with another driver. The family was visiting Maine from Hopedale, Rumford police said.

The father, identified as Matthew Kellogg, 42, and the 5-year-old sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash, and were taken to hospitals in Lewiston and Portland, police said. The other driver, F. Michael Piveronas of Rumford, was alone, and police did not give details on his injuries.

Rumford police said alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, but did not immediately announce any criminal charges for either driver.

The crash shut down Route 2 for about three hours for cleanup and investigation.
