Milton Awarded $5K Fuel Clean Up Grant

Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, the town's property and casualty insurance provider, awarded Milton $5,000 fuel spill clean up grant.

In recognition for its commitment to safety and controlling costs, the Town of Milton was awarded a $5,000 grant for upgrades to its oil and fuel spill clean-up system and confined space work zone equipment. Milton received the grant from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, the town’s property and casualty insurance provider.

Milton’s Department of Public Works benefits from the grant, which funds a new self-contained “spill kit” for cleaning up after accidental leaks and spills of oil or other hazardous materials on local roads or inside town structures. The kit will help the DPW to respond quickly and effectively, mitigate the spread of environmental damage, contain costs of clean-up, and prevent slip-and-fall injuries. The DPW will also boost safety of municipal employees and upgrade its capabilities to perform work in confined spaces – for example, sewer trenches where entrapment, water or atmospheric conditions can present added risk – with the addition of a tripod, winch and self-retracting cable.

“It is always a pleasure teaming up with MIIA for professional development and safety training,” said Joseph Lynch, Milton’s DPW director. “We take the safety of our workforce very seriously and it is great that our insurance carrier rewards our community for all the good work that we do the whole year long. This year’s MIIA Rewards grant allowed us to make two purchases that we had limited funding to acquire in the past. The Spill Containment/Clean-up Kit and upgrade of our harness gear for confined space entries are great additions to our safety toolbox.”

MIIA awards loss control and risk management grants to its member municipalities to fund equipment purchases, implement training programs and perform upgrades to infrastructure that address safety and prevent losses. These proactive efforts help protect the towns, their employees and citizens by avoiding accidents and potentially costly claims.

The Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association is the non-profit insurance arm of the Massachusetts Municipal Association. As a member-based organization, MIIA’s only focus is to provide excellent service and quality risk management solutions to Massachusetts municipalities and related public entities. MIIA insures nearly 400 cities, towns, and other public entities in Massachusetts. For more information please visit www.emiia.org and www.mma.org.
