Day 3: Chestnut Hill Fire, Hundreds Of Residents Still Displaced
Those who live in the Towers of Chestnut Hill's North Tower were allowed home Tuesday night. But South Tower residents aren't so lucky.

NEWTON, MA — Two days ago a fire in an unoccupied unit of a Chestnut Hill high rise damaged the electrical system in both the North and South Tower buildings, leaving hundreds displaced. About 200 families who lived in the North Tower were permitted to return last night, but officials say it could be a bit longer until residents in the South Tower, where the fire was, can return home.
Fire officials said they were able to contain the fire to the apartment, but there was serious water damage to condo units, especially right under the eighth floor, where the fire broke out Monday morning. There are more than 600 people who live in the Towers of Chestnut Hill, a luxury condo complex made up of the two high rises.
"Unfortunately, the South Tower is not ready for reoccupation. Electrical and fire damage repairs are underway. We expect the South Tower to be reoccupied in phases due to varying conditions of units and floors," according to a spokesperson from Newton City Hall.

There is a possibility that floors 10 and above will be able to return to their units tonight, according to the city. Residents of Floors 9 and below are less likely to be able to return to their units tonight and should work on other arrangements.
"We hope to provide more information later today on units on Floors 1 to 9 that may be able to return tomorrow," according to an update from the mayor's office.
