Manhole Explosion In Newton Causes Power Outage
More than 400 people were without power in Newton Sunday evening as temperatures barely dipped below 90.

NEWTON, MA — A manhole cover exploded in Newton Highlands during the heatwave Sunday, prompting the power to go out nearby, according to fire officials. It's not clear how many people were without power because of the explosion, but as of 8:30 p.m. more than 417 people were without power across Newton as temperatures barely dipped below 90 outside.
Someone called 911 to report the explosion just before 7:30 p.m. near the corner of Centre and Walnut streets, fire officials said. And Newton Fire department was quick to respond, according to a witness.
Fire officials say there is no word on what caused the explosion, but firefighters were able to put it out using a dry chemical extinguisher.

Sunday night the power company was still working to restore power to the area.
