Suspicious Item Deemed 'Not Explosive'; Bertucci's to Reopen

Officials closed several businesses Monday as they investigated a "suspicious package."

A suspicious package found at the Bertucci's on Enon Street was not an explosive, but led to area evacuations and a bomb squad response.

State Police determined that a backpack that was left behind was not a hazard but a hoax device. Businesses in the area reopened, except for Bertucci's, which will reopen on Tuesday.

Beverly Police and Fire, along with the Massachusetts State Police responded to a report of a suspicious package at Bertucci’s at 27 Enon Street at 4:40 p.m..

A restaurant employee found the suspicious device. Patrons and employees of Bertucci’s, Eastern Bank, Pinkberry, Garden City Pub and Depot Liquors were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Members of the State Police Bomb Squad went inside the restaurant and determined that the device in question was a hoax device and was no threat to the public.

Authorities gave the all clear at 6:45 P.M..
