When Will the Assessor's Office Inspect My Home?

Welcome to You Ask... Patch Answers where we answer readers questions. We recently received questions about the home reassessments the assessor's office is overseeing. Patch readers want to find out more information about the reassessments. 

What are the reassessments for?

According to Assessor Debbie Carbone, the assessor's office hired Robert Brindle from the firm RRC to measure and list about 300 homes in town for the state mandated cyclical cycle. Both the interior and exterior of the home have to be inspected.

"The interior (list) process is to verify the interior data such as the number of bedrooms, bathrooms and square footage of the homes. The interior inspection takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes," Carbone said.

Which streets have houses scheduled to be reassessed?

The following list of streets was provided by the assessor's office. More homes may be added. Not every house on the streets listed below will be inspected.

• Olde Coach Road
• Macintyre Drive
• Shasta Drive
• Croswell Road
• Spruce Road
• Jacob Rayner Lane
• Samuel Phelps Way
• Tarbox Lane
• Hannah Graves Way
• James Millen Road

When will the contractor come to my house?

There is not a set schedule for the inspections, and homeowners will not be notified before the inspection. According to Carbone, the assessor's office does not have the resources to call each homeowner to let them know about the inspection date and time.

"The assessor's office does not have the man power or the resources to make phone calls to the individual home owners to let them know we will be in the area," Carbone said. "The other side of this coin is weather can be an influence. Example: we may have a plan to be in a certain neighborhood next week to measure and list the entire neighborhood, but on Saturday we receive two feet of snow. That will prolong the inspections until he can get around the houses and the contractor will be sent to another community in which the company has a contract to work in a different capacity."

If no one is home when the contractor shows up, the contractor will measure the exterior and leave a note for the homeowner advising them to contact the assessor's office to set up a future appointment time, Carbone said. You will also have the option to set up a future appointment if the contractor shows up at an inconvenient time for you.
