Norton Police Arrest Hit and Run Motorist

At 5:30 p.m. Monday, Norton Police responded to a report of a hit and run motor vehicle crash that occurred at 25 W. Main St. 

A witness informed the police dispatcher that a vehicle with no headlights almost struck her vehicle, then rear ended another vehicle before it fled the scene. The witness was able to give a description and direction of travel of the suspect vehicle, and followed the vehicle until police arrived.

 Norton Patrolman Kevin Schleicher Jr. stopped the suspect vehicle, operated by Jean Bernier, 71, of Mansfield Avenue, Norton, on Reservoir Street in the area of Arrow Road. Bernier was placed under arrest at the scene.

 Bernier is charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol (second offense), leaving the scene of an accident causing property damage, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and disorderly conduct. Bernier was later released and will appear in the Attleboro District Court Tuesday, Dec. 11.
