Obituary: Douglas McCarthy

Doug McCarthy, 50, formerly of Norton, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

Douglas Edward “Elvis” McCarthy, 50, of South Carolina, formerly of Norton, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

He was the husband of Shirley M. (Winnegge) McCarthy to whom he was married Dec. 27, 1980. 

Born in Boston Oct. 6, 1962, he was a son of Russell J. McCarthy of Quincy and the late Ruth Marie (McLean) McCarthy, and the step-son of Madeline McCarthy of Quincy. He was a long-time resident of Norton, where he was raised and educated, and where he was a 1980 graduate of Norton High School. 

Douglas was employed by Home Depot as the merchandising execution team (MET) supervisor in South Carolina and Georgia. He worked as a member of the Home Depot MET in Massachusetts. He also previously owned a bar in Mansfield, and worked for National Lumber, T.R. White, Corcoran Jennison Companies, D.F. Pray and Grossman’s. 

One of his passions in life was music, and he loved to DJ, entertaining crowds with his Elvis performances. He would jump at the chance to play guitar with his favorite local bands. An avid sports enthusiast, he was a fan of the Patriots, Bruins, Red Sox and Celtics. Douglas enjoyed time spent playing hockey, racing go-karts with his brother, attending NASCAR races with his family, playing golfand dancing. 

He would frequently volunteer for many local causes, from bike runs to acting as a DJ for those he may not have even known but heard about from others. He was a member of the Norton Tri-centennial Committee. Something of a local celebrity in his own right, he appeared as Elvis Presley in an Alberto’s Restaurant commercial, served as a DJ for the Town of Norton First Night, and performed as Elvis throughout the Norton 300th anniversary parade. Douglas continued his volunteering spirit while living on Hilton Head Island, and will be fondly remembered by many organizations and establishments. 

Douglas proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. He enlisted June 26, 1980 and served until his date of separation April 16, 1984. He was the recipient of the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Navy’s 1st Good Conduct Award. Douglas would always go out of his way to express his personal gratitude to any military personnel whom he noticed to be in uniform. 

In addition to his wife, father and step-mother, he leaves his son Douglas Russell McCarthy of Norton; his siblings Kenneth Paul McCarthy and his wife Carol H. (Gray) of N. Attleboro, Susan M. (McCarthy) Carreiro and her husband Richard C. of Norton, James R. McCarthy of N. Attleboro and Linda A. Salisbury of Norton; his sisters and brothers-in-law Theresa and David Mayman of Attleboro, Judith and James Watson of Norton, Joan and Everett Courchine of North Carolina and Delores and Ernest Bowen of Florida; his many step-sisters and step-brothers including his very special step-sister Michelle Loonie; and his nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation with Veteran’s Honors  Monday, April 15, 4 to 8 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Ave., N. Attleboro. A funeral service with Veteran’s Honors will be held Tuesday, April 16 at 10 a.m. in the same location. Burial with military honors will follow at Timothy Plain Cemetery in Norton. Children’s room is available during visitation and during the funeral service. 

Following cemetery services, family and friends will be invited to join the family for a time of continued fellowship and refreshments at the VFW Hall.

Those in need of transportation to visitation may call the funeral home at 508-695-0200 to make an advance reservation for such gratis local transportation. 

Flowers are accepted and must be delivered prior to noon Monday, April 15, 2013.
