NORWOOD, MA - The last 10 years have marked a dramatic shift in the demographic makeup of the United States, with a marked shrinkage of the white population and the rapid growth of the Hispanic community.

These changes were reflected in Norwood, where the share of the white population shrank by 3 percent while the Hispanic population jumped by 89.41 percent.

Norwood also showed an increase in the number of people who identified themselves as multiracial, although the reasons are complex. Experts say the increase reflects changes in the way people identify themselves as well the number of children born to parents of mixed races or ethnicities, along with changes in the wording of census forms themselves.

Other racial groups saw significant percentage increases, although the number of residents was relatively small.

White non-Hispanics still make up the largest demographic in Norwood, comprising 22,932 of its 31,611 people, or 72.54 percent.

The biggest percentage jump was in people who identified as being from two categories plus non-Hispanic. This population increased by 211.78 percent, or 1,297 residents.

Next came those who identified as other non-Hispanic, with a 102.72 percent climb to 373 residents.

The Hispanic population shot up to 2,324 residents, a gain of 89.41 percent.

The percentage of Black non-Hispanic residents grew by 65.16 percent to 2,299 residents.

The number of Asian non-Hispanic residents increased to 2,351 people, a 38.7 percent climb.
