Meet The New Norwood Fire Chief

Norwood General Manager Tony Mazzucco told the selectmen last week that he has picked Fire Captain George Morrice to lead the department.

NORWOOD, MA — Norwood has their new fire chief and the search didn't need to go further than the fire department.

Norwood General Manager Tony Mazzucco told the selectmen last week that he has picked Fire Captain George Morrice to lead the department. Morrice will succeed Chief Tony Greeley and brings 28 years of experience to the position.

“For a kid that grew up on Wilson Street, I never dreamed that I’d be sitting here today taking charge of a great group of people at the Fire Department," Morrice told the board last week. "I look forward to carrying my career further as the chief of the department and bringing it to the future."

Mazzucco said the competitive applicant pool included resumes out of state, with Morrice being the unanimous choice among the three finalists picked by the search committee.

"I think it's wonderful we can promote from within, particularly a captain. If Manager Mazzucco and this fine committee that we had...if they selected you I am very confident you are the man," Selectman Allan Howard said.

Selectman Paul Bishop said he has been inundated with calls about Morrice's capabilities along with glowing remarks.

Greeley has agreed to stay on through Aug. 31 to allow for no gaps in the transition. A pinning ceremony for Morrice is planned for Sept. 1.
