Norwood Man Arrested After Leading Police Chase On 495

A 30-year-old Norwood man was arrested Monday evening after leaving the scene of an accident and failing to stop for police.

A Norwood man was arrested by Massachusetts State Police yesterday after leading a brief motor vehicle chase on Route 495, according to a release from David Procopio at the Massachusetts State Police Office of Media Relations.

Joseph Fry, 30, of Norwood, was arrested by State Police and charged with multiple infractions including failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle and drug possession.

On Monday at 5:30 p.m. the State Police barracks in Middleboro received a 911 call for a hit and run. The caller gave a description of the suspect vehicle to police and reported the car had fled along Route 24 in Bridgewater. Moments later Trooper Mark Cohen observed the suspect vehicle and pulled up behind it. The vehicle, a 2006 Audi A4, continued on to Route 495 northbound and "was operating in an erratic manner, weaving back and forth and straddling lanes," according to police.

"Trooper Cohen activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop the Audi," the release from Procopio stated. "The Audi continued up Route 495, straddling two lanes for approximately one mile before another trooper positioned his cruiser in a manner that forced the Audi to slow and eventually stop in the breakdown lane."

Fry was taken into custody and questioned about his failure to stop. During the questioning Trooper Cohen recovered prescription medication from Fry that was prescribed to another person as well as two Rolex watches with initials that did not belong to Fry. Upon transporting the suspect back to the barracks, Cohen was also made aware that the Audi Fry was driving was stolen from a home in Mashpee.

Sergeant Ensko of the Mashpee Police told Cohen that the victim of a burglary had reported his home broken into and several items taken, including two Rolex watches, the prescription medication found on Fry, and the Audi A4.

Fry was charged with receiving stolen motor vehicle, receiving stolen property over $250, leaving the scene of property damage, failure to stop for police, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, drug possession (Class C), and marked lanes violation. He was released on personal recognizance and was expected to appear today in Taunton District Court.
