While the 10 percent mortality rate is well above the state rate of four percent, the high number of deaths in Peabody likely stems from the concentration of nursing homes in the city. About 52 percent of all coronavirus-related deaths in Massachusetts have been nursing home patients. In a report released earlier this week, the state Department of Public Health said three Peabody nursing homes had more than 30 confirmed cases while another had between 10 and 30 cases.
